But what is Manketti oil?


mongongo treeThe Bushmen of the Kalahari call it the Mongongo, also known as Manketti or in Latin, Ricinodendron rautaneii. The Manketti/Mongongo tree is endemic to Africa from the Kalahari desert situated in the South between Botswana, South Africa and Namibia also grows in minor scale in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Somalia, Chad, Sudan, Mali, Niger and Zimbabwe.

The Manketti/Mongongo tree, which does not bear fruit until it is at least 25 years old, grows 7 – 20 meters in height getting its leaves in mid to end October, flowers and begin to bear oval plum-like, pleasantly aromatic, sweet fruit by the end October towards beginning of November. The Manketti fruits which ripen from February to April are collected deep in the forests as far as 25 km from villages, and it is considered a major source of food for many of the rural communities. The production of nuts depended largely on the annual rainfall.

However, it is not the fruit, but the Mongongo’s seed that it is valued for. Villager’s people collect the Manketti creamy yellow kernels with a pleasant taste which can be preserved for a long time and can be eaten raw or roasted, tasting much like roasted cashews representing a major component of a balanced diet in some communities. 


Traditionally the extraction of the rich yellow- lime green and with a fresh nutty flavor Manketti, or Mongongo oil, oil used in the kitchen requires laborious task where the nuts/kernels are removed from seeds after the removal of the flesh, using an axe is used to remove nuts. More recently, after the oil has increasingly gaining its popularity all over the world, due to of its many benefits especially for skin and hair, a manually operated machine has been used.
